Finding the cheapest personal loans

Thursday June 4, 2009

Personal loans can seem complex and difficult with many people just choosing to stay with whatever bank or lender they feel comfortable with and have history. However, to get the best personal loans deals for you and your financial situation it is important to do your research and shop around for the best possible deal.

The first step when considering personal loans is not restricting your research to one form of lender. Look at banks personal loans, credit unions personal loans, and both small and large financial institutions as the cheapest personal loans may not necessarily be available at the big name banks but with credit unions.

Furthermore, look to more than just the annual interest charge as many personal loans may have hidden fees that can add up to a significant amount. This includes account keeping fees, annual service fees and application fees. Also ask if they charge a flat fee or if all fees are a percentage of the personal loans amount itself as this can be considerably different between different personal loans.

You should also consider the difference between secured and unsecured loans and decide which is better suited for your situation. Security on a personal loan can significantly lower the cost of a loan as the lenders will have some collateral and assurance of your ability to pay off the loan. How this will work is that if you do fail to meet your repayments then the lender will be able to take possession of the security collateral to make up for loss of the personal loan.

If you opt for an unsecured loan and fail to meet repayments then the lender will typically transfer your personal loans to a debt recovery agency that will pursue legal means to claim assets to cover the debt.

Personal loans are becoming more popular in the face of increasing credit card interest rates and mortgage redraw facilities, compare personal loans here and see if one suits your financial situation
